The British Independent Film Awards were created in 1998 to celebrate and promote achievement in independently funded British Films and introduce British filmmakers to a wider audience.

If in December 2010 the Moet sponsored event was dominated by Tom Hooper 's 'The King 's Speech ' and The film received 5 awards including Best British Independent Film, Best Screenplay, Best Actor for Colin Firth, Best Supporting Actress for Helena Bonham Carter and Best Supporting Actor for Geoffrey Rush- we are happy to hear today that the movie has been awarded at the Golden Globes (best actor) and has 12 nominations for the Oscars. In the end at the edition 2011 the movie took home 4 Oscars including a Best Actor win for Colin Firth.

Other British Films that stood out at the British Independent Film awards  were ' Monsters ' for which Gareth Edwards received the award for Best Director and ' Never Let Me Go ' for which Carey Mulligan received Best Actress.

Both Helena Bonham Carter and Liam Neeson were honoured for their life achievement in films.

All in all a healthy sign that British Film is alive and kicking.
